First Class Facets Gem Cutter
Jamie Irvine
The year 2010 was definitely a crossroads year for me. The year that my faceting journey began with going on a fossicking holiday to the gem fields!
It was from this holiday that my passion for cutting grew to what it is today. We found some rough sapphires on the trip and I decided how to learn to cut the gems myself. It took a few stones to gather the confidence to cut my first sapphire and my first sapphire was cut for my good friend Glen. He had seen my work and had full confidence in me and he still has the beautiful sapphire to this day.
Close to this time that I met a friend that happened to be a miner and we decided to start Genuine Aussie Gems as a partnership. It was at this point that I began cutting gems full time predominantly using the sapphires that were found at my friend’s mine.
I treat this period as my apprenticeship as I learnt a lot about how to use my skills to bring out the best in what we had even if the material had plenty of issues that needed attention.
After a few years we decided to go our separate ways and it was at this time that I started First Class Facets and never looked back.
Since starting First Class Facets I endeavour to cut each gem to its full potential. My aim is to cut gorgeous Australian sapphires that will raise the regard in which Australian sapphires are held by my peers and jewellery lovers world wide.
I personally love our Australian gems and I hope that passion shines through in the gems that I cut. Cutting these gems will never grow old and the day I stop learning about these gems will be the day that I retire from gem cutting.
